Cracks in your pavement can cause a variety of problems. Whether it’s your driveway, the path to your front door, foundation, or a patio, even small cracks can be signs of future problems. If your concrete has a structural rebar lattice, deep cracks can put it at risk of rusting and cracking the concrete more. Even small cracks can start as a small problem that progresses into a more significant issue that compromises the integrity of your concrete as it expands and contracts with air temperature. Fortunately, you can fix many of the cracks in your pavement before they get out of hand. While things like crack filling paint are available, our team at Pavement Transformations has some other materials that provide a stronger seal. Read our short guide below for more information.
Concrete caulk
You can use concrete caulk to quickly fill cracks that are less than a quarter of an inch. Most caulks will expand to fill the space, so you don’t have to worry about porous spaces that allow moisture to trickle down into the crack. Caulking is a flexible material that will expand and contract with the concrete over time. It provides a strong seal to ensure that your fix lasts for many years.
Liquid filler
Thin cracks aren’t always a problem. You might have noticed that your concrete had a hairline crack or two after it cured. While unsightly, these tiny cracks aren’t going to cause any major issues right away. You can use a liquid filler to seal them to ensure that a non-issue turns into a problem years down the road. Using a liquid filler will that flows into the crack will create a tight seal that you won’t get from a thicker material like caulk for a tiny crack. Since liquid fillers are thinner, you won’t need to worry so much about wiping away excess materials after filling the crack.
Epoxy
Epoxy resins offer a strong, long-term solution that’s entirely waterproof. You can use epoxy to fill a variety of cracks to protect your concrete from taking in too much moisture that can freeze then expand to make the cracks bigger. It’s important to keep in mind that epoxy hardens quickly, so you’ll need to have everything you need close by as you work.
Crack filling paint
You can fill in other minor cracks with pain that’s designed to fill the space and seal it from moisture. Crack filling paint is easily applied and will flow into the crack to make a tight seal that helps to prevent further damage. Unsightly, hairline cracks can be repaired and covered with a single layer rather than applying a seal then painting over it.
